ABSTRACT

All singers can often develop voice trouble secondary to vocal abuse and overuse, but it is well known that Korean traditional singers develop voice disorders more frequently than western stlye singers. While laryngological concern for voice disorders arising in professional singers has received some attention, empirically motivated investigations of the underlying acoustic make-up of the singing voice have been relatively limited. Treatment of vocal disorders in singers is often a very difficult task for the laryngologist. Since singers have a good knowledge of the voice and voice traninig, they would hardly give consent for treatment to a doctor unless he understood their desire to maximize their voice quality. It is often the case that even when the pathology in a singer's larynx does not appear to be serious, it is still a very important problem for the singer. In this study, the instrumental assessment of the acoustic characteristics of a Korean classical singer's voice can provide the laryngologist with objective imformation to assist in the clinical treatment of specific voice disorders arising in various types of professional singers. The purpose of this research was to systematically analyze and compare the acoustic sound structure of both the speaking and singing voices of Korean classical singers(pansori).
