ABSTRACT

Electroneuronography(ENoG) is now used as a reliable prognotic test for acute facial paralysis. ENoG is an objective electrophysiologic measurement of a muscle compound action potential(CAP) used to assess the number of degenerated nerve fibers. Nonetheless, occational inconsistencies in clinical correlation may diminish the utility of ENoG. So, particular attentions to control of patients and instrumentation variables are required in performing ENoG. The authors performed ENoG in 40 healthy adult(20 males, 20 females) volunteers who had not experienced the facial neuromuscular disorders using the Nicolet CA 2000 Electrodiagnostic system for its standardization and accurate clinical application. The obtained results were as follow; 1) A comparision of the amplitude and latency of CAP from one side of the face to the other did not show a significant difference, and interside variance of amplitude was 19.3%. 2) A comparision of the amplitude and latency of CAP from male to female did not show a significant difference. 3) The mean stimulation intensity used as supramaximal stimulation was 29.2mA in male, 27.1mA in female, that intensity was tolerated in almost cases. 4) There was no significant difference between test and retest. 5) The changed stimulus parameter yielded a significant difference in the amplitude, but no significant difference in the latency.
