ABSTRACT

Recently the fact that refractory chronic otitis media is often related with an allergy has been discussed by many authors. Furthermore fungal disease is clinically important for compromised body resistance to infection by overuse of antibiotics, steroid hormone or immunosuppressive drugs. To evaluate the relationship between chronic otitis media and fungus, 35 patients(male 15, female 20) who were diagnosed as chronic otitis and had watery or mucoid discharge without history of any recent or past fungal disease were studied by performing history taking, physical examination, fungus culture, measurement of serum IgE level and skin test with fungal allergens. The results were as follows; 1) Of total 35 cases, the majority(22 cases) were in the age group between 20 and 39, and sorts of the offending allergen in the patient group were 12. 2) The fungal offending allergens, in order of their frequency in skin test resulst, were Rhizopus nigricans, Ustilago tritici, Trichophyton species and Pullaria pullulans. 3) Mean serum IgE level in the patient group was 185U/ml and that of control group was 130U/ml. There was no statistically significant difference between them.
