ABSTRACT

Lipoma of the tongue is an uncommon tumor which has diagnosed by otolaryngologists and pathologists for a century. Since the first description of this tumor in 1859, by Horton and up to 1969, by Shapiro, 69 cases had been reported. Here, one of our case of lipoma of the tongue is added and this is the first case reported in Korea. A 58 year-old man was admitted to the Yonsei University Severance Hospital on June 2, 1975 because of a painless growth on his tongue of 10 years duration. There is no history of trauma. On examination, he had a 4×4×3cm pinkish, smooth surfaced, pedunculated, oval and egg shaped growth on the tip of his tongue and to the right of the midline. Preoperatively, temporary ligation of the lingual artery was done, and continued the excision of the growth under the endotracheal general anesthesia. Histological examination showed a lipoma with complete clearance.
