Clinical Survey of the Head and Neck Tumors

ABSTRACT

In recent years, it is true that tumors, especially malignant tumors are studied in E.N.T. fields as other special parts to prolong the human life. In this time authors has studied clinical survey for 670 cases who had taken biopsies under diagnosis as tumor among 19,307 cases who visited E.N.T. OPD from January 1966 to December 1970. Its result is following ; 1) Benign tumors were 486 cases among 670 cases and laryngeal benign tumors were 177 cases (36%), benign tumors of the nasal cavity 86 cases (18%) and oral cavity 52 cases (11%). 2) Polyps of the laryngeal benign tumors were 75 cases (42%), papillomas 38 cases (28%) and singer's nodules 17 cases (9%). 3) Malignant tumors were 184 cases among all tumors and it is about 0.96% of all E.N.T. OPD patients and 17% of all head and neck tumors (E.N.T.). 4) Laryngeal carcinomas were 63 cases (34%) of all malignant tumors, carcinomas of the nasal cavity and maxillary sinuses 41 cases (22%) and carcinomas of the tonsil 25 cases (14%). 5) In sex, males were 133 cases (72%) and females were 61 cases (28%) in malignant tumors. In sex ratio, male to female was 2.5 : 1. 6) In age distribution, patiats 40~69 between occupied 75% of all malignant tumors. 7) In pathologic findings, carcinomas were 154 cases (84%), sarcomas 28 cases (15%) and others 2 cases (1%). Epidermoid carcinomas were 139 cases (76%) among all carcinomas. 8) In treatment, combined therapy was done in 18 cases (47%), only irradiation 12 cases (32%) and no therapy 7 cases (18%) among all 38 answer's cases for follow up checks. 9) Two year survival rates are following ; a) No therapy group is 3 cases (42%). b) Irradiation only group were 6 cases (50%). c) Combined therapy group were 12 cases (67%). So combined therapy group had best prognosis.
