ABSTRACT

Non-invasive method for salivary gland stone disintegration by shock wave has been proposed. We attempted to study the sizes of stone size which were destroyed with ESWL. The experimental ESWL were done using and EDAP-LT01 Piezoelectric lithotriptor. The results were as follows : 1) The effect of destruction was proportionally decreased to the increment of increase of stone size. For complete fragmentation the elapsed time was extended to 1.7 times and the storage requirement was increased to 1.6 times respectively with each doubling of the stone size. The difference was statistically significant (p<.001). 2) The difference in degree of the stone fragmentation according to the chemical component of the stone was not statistically significant (p>.05). 3) The mean size of the stone fragmentation was 0.018 mm. In conclusion, it was confirmed that salivary gland stones were completely destroyed by ESWL. Additionally, the chemical component of the stone did not contribute to the stone fragmentation.
