ABSTRACT

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the larynx is an extremely rare neoplasm. The lesion was first described by Gerughty et al(1968)6), who reported three cases. This neoplasm arises from the ducts of the submucosal glands4)5)6). Histologically, the tumor is composed of combination of adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The differential diagnosis must be made from pleomorphic adenoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and especially mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The neoplasm is highly malignant and has a poor prognosis. Treatment of adenosquamous carcinoma damands a more aggressive and radical approach than ordinary squamous cell carcinoma and radiation therapy seems not to be effective1)5)7). We report a case of adenosquamous carcinoma(T4N2bM0, stage IV) of the larynx in a 65-year-old female patient who remained well after surgical management of total laryngectomy and radical neck dissection.
